Offer deadline extended for live chicken vendors
January 6th, 2009(07-25 23:50)
The government has extended the deadline for poultry retailers to give up their licenses to sell live birds in exchange for cash, after the plan fell short of its goal of shutting down 85 percent of the vendors to minimize the threat of bird flu.
It also plans to pay those who have already taken the buyout. The deadline will be extended to September 24. About 72 percent of live poultry retailers opted to give up their licenses, Secretary for Food and Health York Chow Yat-ngok said.
The government, which plans to spend HK$1.1 billion in compensation to retailers, wholesalers and farmers, offered buyouts to vendors last month after imposing a 21-day ban on poultry from the mainland and local farms. The ban followed an outbreak of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus in four wet markets.
